I did this portrait painting primarily as an exercise, using a photo reference from Philippe LeRoyer [link]

This painting was done digitally using Photoshop and a Bamboo graphics tablet. I really had to struggle to not get too caught up in the details (I really want to get away from photo realism in my art). I struggled with not getting carried away with the hat and jacket, and I think as a result they came out a bit flat, but overall I am happy with the result.

This is great! I think you got the likeness bang on! I like that your painting is "warmer" in tone than the photo. I think the value range is very good in the skin and jacket. Coincidentally I did a drawing from this photo a few weeks ago. I didn't know who the photographer was because I got the photo from the drawing script. I'm definitely going to check out more of his work as well as yours.
