Artist's Comments

This painting is a portrait of my roomate. I tooka snap shot of him the other day shielding his eyes fromt he sun and I thought the shadow that fell across his face would make for an interesting value study for me.

Painted in Photoshop 7

I hope you enjoy :)

Good work, it looks geometrically correct as far as my eyes are concerned. :)b

Looking good, Chris. It must have been a very bright time of day, though, becaust the shadow is so strong that it almost flattens his head. A question: if the background is lightened somewhere between +1 and +5, does his head flatten more, or does it pop out a bit more?

Thanks keight. The sunlight was very bright he couldnt look into it without shielding his eyes. In contrast the background in the photo was very bright as compared to what I have painted. I tried adjusting the bg brightness but there was little significant change until about +50 ;) At that point the head did pop out more with the way my monitor is calibrated I think some of the detail in the face drops a bit at the higher brightness in the bg. Here is how it looks with the bg brightness increased so maybe you can tell me what you think: [link]

Thanks for the comment :)

Yeah, the detail does drop out. I pulled them up so that I could look at them side by side, and Sean's hair detail and his eye highlight disappear. So. it looks as though, if you stay with the current color scheme, go with the first one. The only alternative I can see at this point is to go with a complimentary color for the bkg; but that is way outside of your original set of parameters. Like I said, I was curious. Thanks for going to the effort to respond with the new image. It was a very gracious gesture.

dA went into read only mode as I tried to post this earlier.
